Art Gallery

Within walking distance of each other, Hermanus is rich in art galleries. Talented local artists display fine collections ranging from contemporary to modern art. The artists are often available to meet with and talk about the beautiful exhibits for sale.

"First Fridays in Hermanus" is our part of a world wide inititive to make art and art galleries more accessible to the public.

On the first Friday of each month the 15 art galleries in the center of hermanus remain open up till 8pm. Pick up a map, stroll through the village, enjoy a glass of wine from one of our local wine estates and feast your eyes on the vast range of art and fine craft on display.

Sculpture on the Cliffs 2015 showcases the work of nine award-winning South African artists, and can be found along the cliff path.

Our annual Fine-Arts festival in June brings an eclectic mix of arts, with a focus on the visual arts - exhibitions, films, music recitals, concerts, talks, workshops, demonstrations, tastings and pairings, dinners and more.

Fine-Arts 2015 saw more than 300 musicians (including choir and orchestra members) taking part in the festival. In addition 200-plus artists - sculptors, painters, ceramicists, jewellers, glass artists, quilters - took part, as well as more than 50 presenters of talks, demos, tastings and workshops that include writers, artists, chefs, wine makers and other personalities.

Old Harbour Museum

The Old Harbour was proclaimed 'a Museum' in 1972. The area that had been neglected for years was cleaned up and the cement work repaired. Old fishing boats were collected and repaired for outdoor display. An indoor Museum was planned and eventually built along the slopes where many old fishing shacks stood in early days.

The Old Harbour Open-Air Museum is a provincial heritage site. It is unique in that apparently it is one of only two fishing harbours in the world that has been conserved in tact.

The indoor museum houses a specimen display of flowering coastal fynbos that is linked to the Hermanus Botanical Society display in Fernkloof.
